Pinwheels for Prevention

Talk with someone.
Call a friend or relative.  Tell them what you are feeling.  Listen to what they say.

Remember, it's never OK to shake a child--not even once.

  • Never play rough.
  • Never bounce or toss a child.
  • Never jerk or swing a baby by the arms or legs.

Ask a trusted adult to watch your child.
Ask someone you trust who knows how to care for children to take care of your child.  Even 15 minutes can be a nice break!

Call a health-care provider.
If your child keeps on crying, call your health-care provider.  Your child may need medical care.

Call a hotline.
If you ever think you might hurt your child, call for help right away.
ChildHelp USA National Child Abuse Hotline - 1-800-4-A-CHILD (1-800-422-4453).

Take steps to reduce stress.
This can help you stay calm and give your child the loving care he or she needs.

Take time for yourself.
Do something you enjoy every day.  For example, would you enjoy taking a walk?  Reading a book?  Listening to or playing music?  Writing or drawing?

Create a family routine.
Children like structure.  Try to keep the same eating and sleeping routines.  It's OK if you can't always stick to your routine.  Include time for yourself in your family's routine.

Take a parenting class.
For more information, contact:

  • a local school, day-care center, community center, health clinic, hospital or place of worship
  • your local department of social services

Let go of the small stuff.
Try to keep in mind what is really important.  Don't let minor problems become big issues.  If you often feel stressed or depressed, or worry a lot, contact your health care provider.

Get enough rest.
Lack of sleep can lead to shorter tempers and feelings of stress.  Aim to get enough sleep each night so you wake up feeling refreshed.  (For new parents, try to nap when your baby naps.)

Eat healthy foods and be physically active.
A healthy diet and regular exercise can help you feel good mentally and physically.  It can also help reduce stress.  (Be sure to contact your health-care provider before beginning an exercise plan or changing your diet.)

Make friends with other parents -- you can support each other during times of stress.

The steps you take to reduce family stress and improve family health are worth it!
