Changing The Way We Think About Prevention

Hard to believe, summer is half over.  There is no need to worry though, there is still plenty of time to plan that last minute getaway or family vacation.  Even in these tough economic times, families are still counting on a summer getaway.  Even if they choose to take a trip closer to home or a "staycation" , enjoying and exploring their own town or region like a tourist would, a family vacation can be a good opportunity to spend some quality time together and have fun.

We have packed this issue with some great tips and resources to help you survive your family vacation and have fun along the way.

Enjoy!

Mom, Dad...We're Bored!

Even in our age of hand-held videogames and portable movie players sometimes a good old-fashioned game of hangman or bingo can be the perfect activity for those long car or plane trips.

Staying Put

Sometimes the best trip is the one that you don't take at all!

We keep hearing all of this buzz about "staycations".  So what exactly is a "staycation"?  According to Wikipedia a staycation (or stay-cation, or stacation,or staykation) is a  a period of time in which an individual or family stays at home and relaxes at home or takes day trips from their home to area attractions.

Need some help planning your "staycation"?  Start by looking for places and activities already taking place in your city or region: tours, museums, observatories, planetariums, water parks, festivals, community centers.  Many of these may have free activities or special offers just for families.

Check out a list of free family activities.

It's Time to Party!

House_Party_Weekend_Logo

On a single weekend -- October 23-25 -- supporters across the nation will gather to have fun and take action for children.  Private parties, hosted by individuals for friends and family, community events, such as block parties, church suppers, and community concerts, and promotions by businesses (bars, restaurants, retailers, et al) will all take place over this special weekend and will bring people together to share the good news that we CAN prevent the abuse and neglect of our nation’s children whoever and wherever we are.  Learn more about how you can throw a party and share our good news.
