Managing Change - Financial Stress
Managing_Financial_Stress_pub
This concise, easy-to-read folder was created especially for families coping with financial hardship.  It provides practical tips on spending wisely, conserving energy, and following a budget to help regain control of finances.  Includes stress management techniques, plus guidance on how to help children understand why their family is experiencing temporary hardship, and strategies for keeping families strong when times are tough.

Hello Friends of Prevention,

Everyday we hear on the radio and TV about the upsetting state that our nation is currently in.  It is especially difficult during these trying economic times, and with the added stress of the holiday season, not to feel overwhelmed.  In a 2007 survey done by the American Psychological Association, 48% of Americans felt that their stress has increased over the past five years.

How do we translate that for our children?  Will our children understand that we may not buy extravagant holiday gifts this season because of our personal financial situation?  We believe that it is important to communicate to our children about these trying situations, but to ensure them that they are safe and not to worry.

In this month's newsletter, dedicated to helping families cope with economic stress, we feature an article on how to discuss economic hardships with your children, resources for budgeting, and information about how to shop with your children.  We hope this helps reduce the burdens that so many of us are facing.

We also highlight a recent meeting that took place between Prevent Child Abuse America, other advocates and Barack Obama's transition team.  Prevent Child Abuse America was invited to meet with the transition team to discuss the incoming administration's early childhood platform.

May your holiday season be one of minimal stress and great family happiness.  We look forward to the exciting opportunities that await us in 2009!

Should I talk to my children about the current economy?

It is important to inform children about what is going on around them and to tell children, in age appropriate ways, about economic stress.  Many of us struggle with how to go about this.  Many parents are also under pressure this holiday season with how to tell children they will not be receiving the extravagant gift they were hoping for.  We want you to know, you are not alone.
